Handmade Holiday Gifts: A Locket You’ll Flip For

My husband thinks the new flip top milk lids are the most useless innovation to come along in a long time. I agree these lids are not going to revolutionize milk pouring and that design talent might have been better utilized elsewhere but I do like them. Since they stay on the jug as you pour, it is one less thing for me to drop or accidentally throw away. Also I have been saving them for a while. I couldn’t help but think they might come in handy for a project one day and sure enough, the other night, as I was washing one out for my hoard, instead of a milk cap I saw a locket!

Would you like to make some? They would make great holiday gifts for grandparents!

What you’ll need….

Flip top milk caps, ribbon, beads, craft jewels, mini photos of some cute kiddos, chip board (I used a cereal box), double sticky tape, hot glue, and an awl

Here’s how…

  1. Start by cutting out your photo a little larger than the your milk cap opening.
  2. Double stick tape it to a round piece of chip board and attach it inside your milk cap with a few dots of hot glue.
  3. Then make a hole through the rim of your milk cap with an awl.
  4. Next cut a 30 inch length of ribbon and add some decorative beads.
  5. Thread the ribbon ends through the hole you made in your locket (add tape to the ribbon ends and cut a point to make this step easier).
  6. Tie the two ribbon ends into a knot and double stick tape a little holiday greeting or love note to the back of the flip cap.
  7. Finally add a craft jewel to the outside of the lid and your locket is complete.

The only thing left to do it wrap it and give it to someone you love. I love making gifts for my family. Do you make gifts? Please share!
